Miles Clarke led a Cambridge research expedition to Alaska's remote Aleutian Islands in 1981—seeking evidence for the existence of a marine mammal positively identified by the early explorers, and two hundred years later by Miles and Beryl Smeeton—for which he was awarded the Scientific Exploration Society’s Bish Medal.
