My Maasai Life

“Of all the things that Ms. Wizowaty found in the Kenyan savannah, peace is clearly the most important. Stark differences between cultures, customs, ways of life, between herself and her parents – all concern about them seems to have evaporated in the African Sun.”

My Maasai Life

“The family she lived with named her Naserian, "Person of Peace." The women taught her to make tea on a wood fire and to cook ugali (maize porridge) and cabbage. She learned to speak Swahili and a bit of the Maasai dialect. She formed a close bond with a neighbor, a young herdsman, who was going to school and supporting relatives while beating back poverty and disease. Wiszowaty lived as a Maasai daughter, lowering her head so the elders could touch it in greeting.”
