Anna Porter’s latest book Kasztner's Train: The True Story of Rezso Kasztner, Unknown Hero of the Holocaust has been a great success for Douglas & McIntyre. Earlier this year it won the 2007 Nereus Writers’ Trust Non-Fiction Prize and the 2008 Joseph and Faye Tanenbaum Prize in History, part of the Canadian Jewish Book Awards. The book was also short-listed for the prestigious 2008 Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction - one of Canada’s most respected awards for non-fiction writing. In fiction, A Secret Between Us, by Daniel Poliquin, was nominated for the 2007 Scotiabank Giller Prize, and The Silent Raga, by Ameen Merchant, was short-listed for the 2008 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize Best First Book Award in the Canada category. Recording Their Story: James Teit and the Tahltan, by Judy Thompson, received the 2007 BC Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Historical Writing in the spring, while Tsimshian Treasures: The Remarkable Journey of the Dundas Collection, was the third runner up for the prize. In cookbooks, Vij's: Elegant and Inspired Indian Cuisine, by Vikram Vij and Meeru Dhalwala, won the 2007 Canadian Culinary Book Award, the 2007 Cordon d’Or Gold Ribbon International Cookbook Award in the International Cooking category, and 1st prize in the Reference category of the 2007 Alcuin Book Design Awards. The book also won Barbara Jo's First Annual Cookbook Award (2007) and was short-listed for the ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year Award in 2006 in the Cooking category. Restaurateur Pino Posteraro’s cookbook Cioppino's Mediterranean Grill: A Lifetime of Excellence in the Kitchen, also earned itself two award nominations at the 2007 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards - one for Best Italian Cookbook and a second for Best Mediterranean Cookbook.
